"I'm not in sales and I don't run the company, so why bother networking?!" I often hear a version of that question when I tell people about the power of networking, especially when talking with professionals who work for large organizations. It's easy for these people to think that networking isn't for them; that they just need to show up and do their job well. But this couldn't be further from the truth! Networking isn't just about selling - it's about building mutually-beneficial relationships with the people around you. In a large corporate environment where there can be thousands of employees in different departments scattered … [Read more...]
How My Network Helped me Launch my Podcast
Networking. For many, it's a nebulous concept that seems "out there". Sure, it sounds like a good idea. Creating connections and relationships and somehow getting those people to help you with your career, that's all good. But what does networking really look like? And how does it manifest in real results? If someone isn't a hiring manager or a potential client, how can they help you with your career? I recently launched a new podcast called Beer, Beats, & Business. As a solopreneur, I don't have an internal team that I can call on when I want to work on a new project. I have to do it myself... Or I have to find … [Read more...]

Monday Morning Mash-Up – Creating Doesn’t Have to be Fancy
Last week I finished post-production on the audiobook version of Networking in the 21st Century. I recorded and edited it on my own with a laptop, a microphone, and a corner of the living room turned into a mini sound booth. It will be released in a few weeks, and I'm pleased with how it turned out. It doesn't have all of the polish of a recording done in an expensive studio, but it comes pretty close. The process took me back to recording DIY demos with my old band. We'd take whomever's basement we could find that had absent (or relaxed) neighbors, throw in some mics and a 4-track recorder, and go to town. If only we had the … [Read more...]

Poetry and Page Numbers
Updated 7/12/2018 When I write poems for poetry slams I have a tendency to rework a line over and over. I want it perfect. I move words around, play around with contractions...I generally obsess. And over the past year I've written over 300 haiku - a poetry form that demands precision because you only have 17 syllables. It required me to spend a lot of time thinking about each word. But there's a time and a place. For example, it doesn't help me to obsess over every little word when I'm writing a 1,000 word article. Give Things the Right Amount of Attention This has been an important lesson as I've written, edited, and formatted … [Read more...]
The 30 Minutes Between You and Your Dreams
I sent my latest draft of Networking in the 21st Century: Why Your Network Sucks and What to Do About It to the editor last week. I have to admit that I'm pretty excited about it. And a little surprised. If you had asked me at the beginning of the year if I could write a nearly 200-page book, I would have demurred and said that I didn't have the time or the patience to do it. Writing a book was a pipedream. So how did I do it? And why should you care, even if you don't plan on writing a book anytime soon? One Step at a Time Like many of us in this information-soaked age, my attention span is not the greatest. In addition I run my … [Read more...]
