Distributed Mentoring: How to Get Help and Advice from Your Network
Do you want a mentor? Besides networking, one of the most common pieces of advice doled out to young professionals is to find a mentor. Working with an experienced and seasoned business veteran can go a long way to helping you navigate the trials and opportunities of your early professional life. They can give you feedback, share their observations, and alert you to possible missteps in your professional life. One of the biggest challenges to finding a mentor, though, is in the finding part. It can be difficult to uncover someone who has experience and knowledge to share, the time and willingness to share it, and a personality that … [Read more...]
Monday Morning Mash-Up – Embrace Your Story (You Are in the Middle of It)
One of my favorite posse cuts is the song North by Northwest by a lesser-known group out of Seattle called the Blue Scholars (a posse cut is a hip-hop song which features 4-7 verses by different rappers - the whole "posse" is in the song). One of the verses is from a guy named Macklemore. You might have heard of him. His song Thrift Shop has 881,134,271 views on YouTube and he won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 2014. ...Which is ironic, because this posse cut is from 2007 and he started releasing albums in 2000. That's fourteen years before his "new artist" designation. I'm not here to question the Grammy's idea of new, but I … [Read more...]
Thank You for Arguing – Jay Heinrichs
When I was in high school, I sat at a lunch table with a bunch of really smart kids. I don't know if you would call us nerds, or dorks, or whatever, but we were the ones who were in all of the AP classes together, and Latin, and calculus, and, well, you get the point. But we were still teenage boys which meant that there was a lot of testosterone and arguing at that table. This confluence of brains and competition meant that you were judged in no small way by your ability to engage in debate and hold your own. Oh, how I wish that I'd had this book then! But failing my invention of a time machine, Thank You for Arguing is still a … [Read more...]

Win the Crowd – Steve Cohen
This article was originally published a few years ago at the RockStar Success Library. Still one of my favorite public speaking guides. When you think about it, magicians are truly the masters of sales. We know that they are going to perform feats that are designed to fool us, we might even try to stay on our guard, but they always get us. And we love it – we even want more! For their illusions to work, magicians have to sell us over and over again. In becoming a top magician, Steve Cohen has also become a master salesperson and communicator. In Win the Crowd, it’s fascinating to see how he’s drilled down into the ways he … [Read more...]
7 Ways to Ask for Referrals Over and Over (Without Being Obnoxious)
Customer referrals are a powerful way to build your business. Getting these referrals involves almost no costs and often leads to an easier sale (because they trust the person who referred them). It's also a great testimony to the quality of service you provided the referring customer. By learning to ask for them effectively, you can see a huge boost in your career. Developing a strong referral pipeline is critical in professions well beyond the "traditional" salesperson. Even if you don't have "sales" in your job title, referrals are important. They matter because: Professionals like attorneys or accountants need new clients. Want … [Read more...]
