When You Get There, There You Are
“I think I would really like his life.” That was a statement made by my wife last year while watching an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. It's one that I could echo. And it was an understandable sentiment. It seemed like a pretty good life. Travel around the world, go to interesting places, eat delicious food, spend time with fascinating people. Even his demeanor seemed well earned: grizzled and patient, with the self-awareness of someone who had a tough life and made it through. But as is often the case, we didn’t know the whole story. And one of the people who didn’t want his life... was Anthony himself. "Over … [Read more...]
Smartphones Don’t Cause Evolution: How Misunderstanding Technology Can Hurt Your Professional Network
There's an awful lie that I see tossed around by social selling "gurus", technology ninjas, and futurists. They love to suggest that technology has caused humans to evolve. For them, technology is driving a fundamental and permanent shift in the way we communicate, engage, and even think. They think that Facebook and other social media platforms are changing how we relate to each other. For the past ten months, I've been working on a side project: a book of haiku. I'm trying to get back to my poetry-writing (I used to slam poetry here in Chicago) and I'm writing one poem a day. I've written over 300 and I want to release them as a book after collecting a year's worth. The working title is: five seven five: a daily glimpse of Chicago life seen through haiku But what to call my book isn't the quandary. It's what to call myself on the cover. Personal Brand: Expansive or … [Read more...]
