This article was originally published on January 16th, 2012. Even though I don't often write about sales, on some level, all networking and communication is based on our ability it influence. This is a great place to start! I have a shelf in my office full of sales books and they pretty much all say the same things. So these days when I read another book on sales, what I'm looking for are the few nuggets that stand out and make the lightbulb go off. It might be a reminder of something I already knew, or a different way of looking at a part of the sales process, but it's a piece of actionable information that will make a difference in … [Read more...]
The Right Questions Can Help Fix the Environment (and Your Life)
“The quality of a person’s life is determined by the quality of the questions they ask.” – Anthony Robbins Have you read William Kamkwamba’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind? It's a fantastic story about perseverance, and how he used ingenuity to build an electricity-generating windmill for his family’s home despite being surrounded by poverty and doubt in Africa. There are a many reasons why the book engaged me, but one of them is because I’ve also been thinking about how to build windmills. One of the topics I daydream about is how to make every house in the U.S. a zero-sum electricity user by using solar and wind power right at the … [Read more...]
Love is the Killer App – Tim Sanders
This article was originally published on October 17th, 2008. It's a good reminder for me to continue to show the bizlove as my reach and influence grow over the years. I first read Love is the Killer App about 3 years ago. I was just starting RockStar Consulting and I stumbled upon it sitting on a friend’s bookshelf. It turned out to be a great book back then and I just reread it after picking up my own copy. As I was rereading it, I found myself wondering, “Was I doing these things all along or did I learn them from this book and just integrate them so deeply I feel like I’ve always been a lovecat?” Tim and I share a … [Read more...]
Mindfulness and Money – Kulananda and Dominic Houlder
This article was originally published on November 6th, 2008. But even if we aren't in the midst of an economic apocalypse, money is still on our minds. I was at the Evanston Public Library yesterday and I was blown away by how many books there on how to make, handle, invest, accumulate and basically do anything you want with money. I mean, whole shelves of them. Obviously this is something that is on people’s minds. Yet with the economic “meltdown” in the U.S. over the past few months, it’s pretty obvious that we are still relatively uneducated and foolish in the way we view and use money. Mindfulness and Money is written from a … [Read more...]
Endless Referrals – Bob Burg
Ask any salesperson or business owner what their three biggest challenges are, and one of them will be “finding new prospects.” Millions (if not billions) of dollars are spent every year in order to market, advertise, and sell products and services. Much of this is wasted, though, because it doesn’t actually lead to the relationships that create sales. Endless Referrals fills an important role by acting as a sort of almanac for salespeople on different ways to prospect and bring potential clients into their pipeline. In fact, I think the book should be called Endless Prospecting, because it covers way more than just referrals. This … [Read more...]
Drive – Daniel Pink
Quick note: Daniel wrote a blurb for Networking in the 21st Century, but I wrote this review over 4 years ago, so I'm not biased in it. Big Thought When it comes to motivation, there's a gap between what science knows and what business does. Our current business operating system – which is built around external, carrot-and-stick motivators - doesn't work and often does harm. We need an upgrade, and science shows the way. This new approach has 3 essential elements: 1)Autonomy...2)Mastery...3)Purpose. (right from Dan's recap on page 203 – thanks, Dan!) Ideas, Implications, and Questions I think that Drive has big implications for how … [Read more...]
Act Like You Control Your Time
This article isn't going to solve all of your time-management agonies. It's not full of lists on how to maximize your time, minimize your email inbox, or how to set your priorities the right way. There are other blogs, books, and online courses that will make you a time-management wizard. I am going to ask you a question that will put you on the right path. It's the first step to making the most of the time you have. Most people think that the reason they don't get everything done is because they haven't stumbled upon that right tip, tool, or lifehack. (Oh, I can separate an egg yolk with an empty plastic bottle, now my life is going … [Read more...]
