You Need to Go Old School: The Power of the Pen in Sales

pens

In my years of selling, I’ve found one of the most powerful and versatile sales tools is the simple ink pen.  Whether it’s a fancy Mont Blanc or a basic blue Bic, the pen can be used for many purposes during your conversations. As we go more and more digital, it's easy to leave our pens in our briefcases or purses.  But when you don't take out your pen, you lose a powerful tool that can help you close more deals.  It might seem like just a little tube of plastic or metal, but it's secret weapon that has a lot of uses. Why Your Pen Is Still Useful If you are a professional salesperson, you should remember a few key points about your … [Read more...]

A Simple Step that Helps Millennials Start Professional Conversations

Are Millennials better or worse at interacting on a one-on-one basis because of the prevalence of technology in their lives? I’m not sure what the long-term effects of growing up in a world of computers and cellphones will be.  However, watching high school and college students communicate leads me to believe that texting and digital communication have affected their “in-person” communication skills (but that is a completely unscientific observation). When looking at what skills to develop, face-to-face communication is a critical place to start.  The more effectively you interact with others, both online and off-line, the more powerful … [Read more...]

Your Intuition is Like a Needy Cat

I was in a bit of a panic this morning.  I couldn't think of what to write in this month's MMMU!  I'm sitting here at my desk, wracking my brain, and my little black cat, Swing, decides that she wants some attention. If you have a cat, you know that their reputation of being standoffish is only half of the story.  When they want attention, they are relentless.  I gave up and let her into my lap, all the while thinking, "But I need some inspiration!" It just so happens that in giving myself a few minutes to scratch her behind her ears, I found my idea.  This stretch of August seem to be a no-(wo)man's land for many professionals.  We … [Read more...]

Social Selling is Here to Stay: Here are 7 Ways to Make LinkedIn Work for You Today

retro antique phone telephone

Updated December 2018 I often think about the sales meeting when a sales manager first suggested using the telephone to sell. I'm sure there were a bunch of reactions to the thought:  One person probably yelled out that you have to talk to prospects face-to-face if you want to have success and the phone would never work in sales.  A few people in the back of the room probably whispered to each other about how confusing phones were.  And still another person probably stopped paying attention because they thought, "Well, none of my customers have telephones." I'm sure that there was a bunch of resistance and confusion.  And then … [Read more...]

Mindful Tech – David M. Levy

If you climbed a mountain to ask an ancient Zen master about the right approach to Facebook, what would he say? I don't think that David would make a claim to mastery, but Mindful Tech is the closest thing I've seen for a Zen response to technology.  It's both fascinating and filled with common sense. Instead of directives on how to respond to email and social media requests, he examines how we relate to it on a daily basis.  It was interesting to read this on the heels of Sherry Turkle's Reclaiming Conversation.  In many ways, I think he picks up where she leaves off.  There weren't many prescriptions for how to deal with the … [Read more...]
