We've all experienced the online narcissist. The person who is constantly sharing what they are working on, where they are going, who they are going there with, and what they are eating when they get there. And we think, "I'm so glad that I'm not like them!" I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are. It's not always as extreme, but when I look at how professionals use digital platforms for business purposes, I find they do the exact same thing. Salespeople brag about how good they are at hitting quota and the features of what they sell. Executives have lists of their companies' accomplishments and their rise through the … [Read more...]

Good Things Happen When You Keep it Simple
I really dig board games. Currently I'm playing a game called Pandemic Legacy. It has an interesting twist because it's a cooperative game where the players work together to beat the game. In this case, we're trying to cure epidemics that are spreading around the globe (yeah, it's not necessarily a "peppy" game). And as a "legacy" game, the effects of one game carry over into the next, so the pressure to win is always on. And that's what the game is great at: creating tense, high-stakes moments. You're just as likely to lose as you are to win, and the game keeps changing the rules on you. You are always walking a tight-rope with … [Read more...]
Humans are Underrated: Geoff Colvin
Because of a shortage of shelf space at home, I usually try out a book from the library first. I only buy it if I can see myself coming back to it for reference. Here's the deal: I got one chapter into Humans are Underrated before I put it down and ordered it on Amazon. Geoff is addressing the very human capacities that I'm talking about all of the time with salespeople and professionals. When I talk about the evolution of sales that is the core of Hyper-Connected Selling, I'm constantly pointing out that computers can do lots of routine and rote tasks well, but humans are the best at being human. I've spent the past few years showing … [Read more...]

How Watching Netflix Will Make You a Better Salesperson
It's a Friday night. It's been a long week, but you're finally at home and ready to unwind. You sit in front of the TV, open up Netflix (or Amazon Prime, Hulu, or your favorite streaming option), and BAM...all of a sudden you are faced with a massive number of choices. Lists and lists of movies, TV shows, documentaries, shorts...they keep coming. There are so many options that you might spend all of your time going through them and trying to pick one. I call it the Netflix Hole, where you spend your down-time looking through all the entertainment options instead of being entertained by one of them. If you've spent any time there, … [Read more...]
How Small Steps Every Day Will Make You Have Big Change
I hope you'll indulge me for a moment. I want to brag a little. (But I promise there's a point.) I've been using a phone app to learn Spanish, which has been a goal of mine for over a decade. It usually takes me about 10 minutes a day, so it's not a huge investment of time. But it's something. And a few weeks ago, I hit my 365th day in a row practicing Spanish. I'm pretty excited about that. I'm not saying that I've mastered it (Duolingo says I'm 59% fluent, which feels about right). The next step would be to find some speaking Meetups or even a trip south of the border to immerse myself in the language for a week or two. But … [Read more...]
