My Trick to Successful First Dates (It Works on Networking “First Dates” Too!)

Updated October 2018 I wrote this article about how to do well on first dates (because I was going on a lot of first dates and I was struck by how awkward they can be). I realized that the tool works just as well when you grab a cup of coffee or lunch with a new networking partner...which is basically another form of first date. Breaking news!  Women and men tend to have different communication styles! Yeah, I know, it's not new news at all.  But it's funny, because we so often persist in talking to each other like we all have the same style. Act a Little Happier than You Feel

A quick tip you won't find in most business books: Act a little happier than you feel. Whether you are talking to a client or prospect, sending an email to your boss, or attending a networking event, make your disposition a little cheerier than you normally would.  Smile a little more, be a little more animated, and when someone asks you how you're doing, say "Great! Thanks for asking."
