Today is the best day to start your New Year’s Resolutions.
By the way, it doesn’t matter when you read this sentence. It’s always true. Whether you read it on January 2nd, January 3rd, or April 6th…today is the best day to start your New Year’s Resolutions.
We only have now. If you want to make a change in your life, you have to do it now.
Today.
Here.
My friend Tara read my article on creating lasting change and pointed out that one of the negative side effects of goal-setting is that it gives us the chance to push off taking action. In fact, it seems that most New Year’s Resolutions are goals we come up with around Dec 10th when we realize that there’s something we should be changing… but we don’t want to get around to it quite yet.
I totally agreed with her, and said: “People forget that the whole point of goal-setting is to inform your actions in the present moment. That’s the only place that we can actually do something.” I think there might be some wisdom in that.
Consider your own process of setting your New Year’s Resolutions. Remember thinking at the end of 2016, “In 2017, I’m totally going to ______”? There was something that you knew you wanted to shift, but you weren’t quite willing to commit. It made you feel good to recognize the need…without actually having to change anything.
Fast forward to now. Whatever that blank was, do it today. It doesn’t have to be big or grandiose or dramatic, it just has to be movement forward. Take some action. Change a behavior. Start doing something you have always said you’d do, or cut something out that you know isn’t helping. Stop bullshitting yourself. If there is something important to you, that will have valuable results in the future, do it now.
The world needs your best. The people around you need your best. You need your best.
Have a RockStar Year!
